One for the Road

Phils Salvage Trip Thanks to Rollins' Homer

PHOENIX — It took a week, six games and trips to two different cities, but the Phillies finally got another win. Thanks to Jimmy Rollins' three-run homer in the seventh inning off Eddie Oropesa, the Phils squeezed out a 4-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks, Sunday at Bank One Ballpark.

The win helps the Phils salvage a horrible road trip where they went 1-6 and lost a game by 14 runs while blowing leads in three others.

Down 2-0, Tomas Perez started the seventh with a one-out single off starter Brian Anderson. After reliever Jose Parra (0-1) walked Todd Pratt and struck out Doug Glanville, pinch hitter John Mabry plated Perez with a single to shallow center field.

Oropesa, the former Phillie, replaced Parra, but Rollins greeted him with his third home run of the series and fifth of the season on a 1-1 count.

"I enjoyed the weekend, I enjoyed playing here in Arizona," Rollins said. "We came up short three out of four times, but we played some good baseball. It felt good not to get swept, but we played good enough. We could've easily won three out of four or maybe all four, counting today."

"They'll continue to do well," Diamondbacks manager Bob Brenly said. "I don't know what in the world got into Jimmy Rollins in this series — he's like Mike Schmidt up there."

Arizona climbed within 4-3 in the bottom of the inning on Greg Colbrunn's two-out solo homer off reliever Carlos Silva. But the Diamondbacks could not scratch out the tying run and had a four-game winning streak snapped.

Starter Randy Wolf (3-2) yielded two runs and six hits over six innings for the win, the Phillies' fourth in 22 road games. Jose Mesa pitched a perfect ninth for his 13th save in 15 chances.

"This road trip is bad enough, but if we had gone 0-7 it would have been awful," Wolf said. "For the most part, I felt I did good. All you can do is give yourself a chance."

Colbrunn staked Arizona to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run double.

"The last week and a half, I've been struggling," Colbrunn said. "It's nice that BB gave me another chance."

Anderson yielded one run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings but again failed to pick up his first win of the season.

"I feel good out there, my stuff feels good," Anderson said. "I'll try to do that every time out and see if we can win a game when I pitch."

"His stuff was a little crisper, but his location has been outstanding," Brenly added. "I thought we had got everything out of him that we could."

Despite the triumph, the Phillies were outscored on the road trip, 52-25.

"We lost six games on the trip, but we had (Randy) Johnson and (Curt) Schilling on the ropes in their own ballpark," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. "But we just didn't get it done. It's a bad road trip, but if we can piece together a couple of things, we might be able to get on track."
