Phils Defeat D'backs in 10, But Lose Lieberthal

P> PHOENIX (TICKER) -- Pat Burrell's single in the top of the 10th inning scored backup catcher Gary Bennett with the go-ahead run as the Philadelphia Phillies edged the Arizona Diamondbacks, 6-5.

Burrell, a .296 hitter with runners in scoring position, was unable to get down a bunt, but lined a single to left to score Bennett from second base and clinch the Phillies' first series win over the Diamondbacks in seven tries.

"I gotta get the ball down anyway, regardless (of the call)," Burrell said. "Then he threw a slider right in the middle of the plate. I've been working on trying to hit good pitches, it was a good pitch to hit."

Miguel Batista (1-2) started the 10th for Arizona and surrendered a leadoff single to Bennett before walking Travis Lee. After Burrell's single, Rob Ducey sacrificed and Tomas Perez tried to squeeze, but the Diamondbacks pitched out and Lee was caught in a rundown. Perez popped out to end the inning.

Lieby hurt
Mike Lieberthal is helpded off the field after injuring his right knee during the second inning.

Ricky Bottalico (2-2) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win. Jose Mesa worked the 10th and retired Luis Gonzalez on a flyout before giving up a first-pitch single to Matt Williams. Mark Grace and Reggie Sanders flied out as Mesa recorded his 10th save in 11 tries.

Though the win propelled the Phils to the top of the NL, the cost was high. Catcher Mike Lieberthal left the game in the second inning with a sprained right knee after being picked off at first by Arizona starter Brian Anderson. The all-star was helped off the field and, after an evaluation, was placed on the 15-day disabled list. He'll undergo further tests back home after the road trip concludes on Sunday.

"It's a sprained right knee that may involve one or two ligaments," Philllies trainer Jeff Cooper said. "(It's) the MCL and ACL. He's been for X-rays. He'll be re-evaluated tomorrow and we'll set up an MRI when we get back on Monday."

Lieberthal had singled to lead off the inning. Anderson, who has one of the game's best pickoff moves, threw to first. Lieberthal lunged toward the base, but his knee buckled. He grabbed it and fell to the ground in pain as first baseman Mark Grace tagged him out.

"When you see it," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. "You get a sick feeling. You're talking about an All-Star catcher. We don't really know, at this point. It's not torn. That's a good sign. We don't think it's season ending."

Lieberthal was replaced by Bennett, who went 2-for-4 but was upset when informed that his teammate was headed for the DL.

"I don't want to hear that," Bennett said. "He's one of the leaders of this club, and we need him back -- quickly."

Meanwhile, reunion weekend continued in Arizona as Phils starter Omar Daal went 3-for-3 at the plate against his former team in his 100th career start. But he did not figure in the decision after allowing four runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Daal was chased for Chris Brock after walking Grace with two outs in the fifth. Sanders followed with a 427-foot home run to dead center field, his second two-run shot of the game.

"It's been difficult because we're not playing good baseball," Sanders said. "Tonight, we had a chance. I think we played good ball, we just couldn't get the job done. ... I feel good, I've been working with (hitting coach Dwayne) Murphy.

Arizona scored all of its runs on homers and rallied in the fourth to send the game to extra innings after trailing 5-0.

Gonzalez hit his league-leading 17th homer, a solo shot in the fourth, on Daal's inning-opening pitch, and Sanders hit a 448-foot two-run blast later in the inning to get the Diamondbacks within 5-3.

"You don't want to battle back every night," Arizona manager Bob Brenly said. "It'd be nice to jump on someone early. Lately it's been a struggle."

Scott Rolen and Bennett each had a two-out, two-run doubles in the Philllies' five-run third inning.

Anderson gave up five runs -- all earned -- and 10 hits with a walk and two strikeouts in seven innings.

Notes: Along with Lieberthal, right-hander Vicente Padilla was also placed on the DL with a sprained left ankle. He was hurt in batting practice Friday. Catcher Johnny Estrada and right-hander Nelson Figueroa were called up from Triple-A Louisville and will both be in Phoenix in time for Sunday's game.
